The 12th Shanghai Biennale: Proregress
Born in Gunma county in 1976, and now lives in Yokohama, Japan.
His video installations are often based on performances and constructed scenarios, and investigate the boundaries between the private and the public, a domain of specific importance to his native Japanese culture. He attended Chelsea College of Art and Design, London as well as the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam. Recent solo exhibitions include “Battlelands” at Pérez Art Museum, Miami (2018); “Today My Empire Sings” at De Hallen, Haarlem (2016); “Portrait of a Failed Silence”, MUAC – Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo, Mexico City (2015); “Trapped Voice Would Dream of Silence”, Arts Maebashi, Maebashi (2015) etc. Recent group shows include “Negotiating the Future”, Asian Art Biennale, Taipei (2017); “Reenacting History”, National Museum of Modern and Conteporary Art, Gwacheon (2017); “The Grand Balcony”, La Biennale Montréal, Montréal (2016) etc.
