Yasumasa Morimura has been working on self-portraits. Since his first self-portrait, “Portrait - Van Gogh” (1985), he has transformed himself into many diverse subjects, focusing on icons from Western culture. His subjects include famous paintings, images of popular culture, or mass media. His practice is based on deep research on the subjects, and brings a new perspective to iconic images. His work questions not only identity and gender, but also the medium of photography and painting.
